The Urumi is a traditional South Indian whip-like sword featuring a flexible blade. Originating from Kerala, it is closely associated with the ancient martial art Kalaripayattu. Designed for advanced training, the weapon uses centrifugal force, functioning as both a sword and a whip. It is also known as Surul Vaal.
Design:The Urumi consists of a hilt attached to one or more flexible steel blades, typically measuring between 5 to 11 feet. When not in use, it can be worn around the waist like a belt.
Usage:It is practiced in Kalaripayattu using agile spinning and sweeping movements, often wielded in pairs or alongside a shield.
