📝 Product Description

The Urumi is a traditional South Indian whip-like sword featuring a flexible blade. Originating from Kerala, it is closely associated with the ancient martial art Kalaripayattu. Designed for advanced training, the weapon uses centrifugal force, functioning as both a sword and a whip. It is also known as Surul Vaal.

🔑 Key Features & History

Design:
The Urumi consists of a hilt attached to one or more flexible steel blades, typically measuring between 5 to 11 feet. When not in use, it can be worn around the waist like a belt.

Usage:
It is practiced in Kalaripayattu using agile spinning and sweeping movements, often wielded in pairs or alongside a shield.

Origin:
Believed to date back to the Sangam period, the Urumi was historically used for self-defense. Due to its wide and dangerous area of impact, it was rarely used as a primary battlefield weapon.

Mastery:
The Urumi is considered one of the most difficult weapons to master and requires exceptional skill to avoid self-injury.

📚 Other Meanings of Urumi

Urumi (Film):
A 2011 Malayalam-language historical action drama directed by Santosh Sivan, based on a 16th-century plot to assassinate Vasco da Gama.

Urumi (Musical Instrument):
A double-headed, hourglass-shaped drum from Tamil Nadu, South India. This drum is widely believed to possess sacred and supernatural powers and is traditionally played during religious ceremonies and processions.
